Course Introduction

The National General Certificate is the most widely held health and safety qualification in the UK with over 100,000 people having gained the award since it was launched in 1989.

Health and Safety appointed representatives are faced with a constant battle against ever changing Health and Safety legislation and the impact on their respective organisations. In addition EC regulations stipulate that Heath and Safety representatives must be "competent" to perform the role.

Upon completion the NEBOSH Certificate course is recognised as providing this competence. Along with, providing delegates with the skills to interpret and implement current health and Safety requirements.

Overview
The NEBOSH National General Certificate covers the main legal requirements for health and safety in the UK, identification and control of workplace hazards, and the practical application of this knowledge. No previous health and safety knowledge is required but candidates should note the assessment includes a requirement to write a short report. The qualification is divided into three units, each of which is assessed separately:

  • Management of Health and Safety (NGC1)
  • Controlling workplace hazards (NGC2)
  • Health and safety practical application (NGC3)

Examinations
The NEBOSH General Certificate programme results in a nationally recognised Health and safety qualification. In order to achieve this award delegates are required to attend formal examinations at the conclusion of the programme. The exams comprise of three parts:

Part A: Identifying and Controlling Hazards

Part B: The Management of Safety

Part C: The Practical Assessment

To pass the National Certificate candidates must average at least 50% on the written papers covering Part A and B (with not less than 45% on either paper), and at least 60% on the practical assessment Part C.
